Barrow - ring-barrow

The National Monuments Service's description

Described by ASI in 1970 as a 'small circular mound (diam. 20m NW-SE) of earth and stones, surrounded by a well defined fosse. The mound has been very disturbed, it has a small depression at the centre and portion of it has been removed at ENE and NE. At S it sprawls across the fosse area. There are suggestions of a low wide earthen bank outside the fosse, but this is not at all well defined. It is situated on the NNE slope of a large high undulating ridge, ENE of a hollow containing a pool. It overlooks flat rushy land to NE alongside the River Gaine. Good view to N' (SMR File 28/04/1970). Depicted on the 1837 Ordnance Survey Fair Plan map as a small circular enclosure delimited by a bank and fosse with trees in the interior and marked as a 'fort'. A second survey in 1980s described the monument as a 'small circular earthen mound, surrounded by a wide shallow fosse with remains of a low outer bank. There is a slight depression in the top of the mound, due to disturbance. Sited on the NNE slope of a high ridge' (SMR File).
Surveyed in 2012 and described by McGuinness (2012, 27-8) as following: ‘Site, identified as   a ring-barrow in RMP but marked as a simple mound on OS 6" sheet, was bulldozed by man years   ago (pers. comm. Peter Wallace and Jim Sheridan, who live locally) and no trace of it remains. It was located on summit of low ridge overlooking a tiny lake (kettle-hole) immediately to SW.
