The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on a small hillock in grassland, with extensive views in all directions. Tower house type castle belonging to George Fay, an Irish papist is depicted in the townland of 'Tromore' on the 1657 Down Survey map of Rathgarve parish (NLI, MS 723-4). Two rectangular structures or field boundaries are depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. One of which is annotated ‘Castle’, with a tree-covered sub-rectangular shaped walled garden or orchard (approx. dims. 40m N-S x 70m E-W) depicted to the W which has since been levelled. Only the grass-covered wall footings of this levelled castle which was enclosed by low grass-covered earthen banks forming an irregular shaped enclosure or possible bawn area. No surface remains visible of this levelled 'Castle' or earthworks belonging to a possible bawn on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011.
