The National Monuments Service's description
The precise location of the 15th century stone castle belonging to the FitzHerbert or Mac Herbert family in the present village of Street has not been identified. In 1455 ‘Caislen-na-Sraide’ [castle of the street] was demolished by O’Farrell; and the son of Mac Herbert was slain by him while taking the castle’ (AFM, 995). It is not clear if this is a reference to a stone castle located on the summit of the motte and bailey castle (WM002-027----) or more likely to a second castle (WM002-029----) at a different location in the village of Street which has not been precisely identified. In 1464 the Annals recorded that the ‘Sraid of Moybrecray [was] burnt by Baron Delvna, both churches and houses, and many preying and burning committed betwixt them, to witt, the Nugents and Herberts’ (AFM, 1036). The terrier of the 17th century Down Survey map for the parish of Street recorded that 'it hath 3 Runious Castles [WM002-027---; WM002-040----] (but few inhabytants therein) at Streete' (NLI, MS 723-4). The three castles may have consisted of one stone castle on top of the summit of the Anglo-Norman motte (WM002-027---), and the ruins of two stone castles (WM002-040----) in the village of Street. The Down Survey map depicts a two storey high gable ended house (WM002-041----) in the present village of street. No castle ruins are depicted on this map. Today there are no surface remains of any medieval buildings or ruins of stone castles in the village of Street which are mentioned in the terrier of the Down Survey.
