Ringfort - rath

Situated on a rise of ground in undulating countryside with excellent views to W, restricted views by surrounding hills in other directions. Ringfort (WM001-022----) 360m to NNW, second ringfort (WM001-025----) 390m to SSE. On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map the W side of the ringfort is intersected by a laneway running N-S. This laneway appears to cut across the W side of the enclosure creating the irregular-shaped monument depicted on the revised 1911 ed. 25 inch map. Roughly D-shaped area (dims. 38.8m NE-SW; 33.4m NW-SE) enclosed by an earthen bank best preserved from W to N, elsewhere mainly reduced to a scarp with straight side at S. No visible trace of an enclosing fosse. A gap (Wth 2.2-4.4m) at E probably represents the original entrance feature. A modern field fence intersects the site at W on a N-S axis. The interior is uneven, rising from the perimeter towards the centre. There is evidence of disturbance from quarrying and there are slight traces of old cultivation ridges running NW-SE.
