The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on a gentle SE-facing slope overlooking the Aughrim River. Marked as 'Site of Castle' on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; the field to the N is still called the 'Castle Field'. Not visible at ground level. Local landowner discovered a passage or a large stone lined culvert along the SW side of the laneway leading to the site from the NW. Some of the stone used in the late 19th century to construct 2 farm labourers cottages immediately S of the site (on the W side of the laneway leading to the site from the SW) look as though they could have been re-utilized from an earlier building' (SMR File 27/06/1990).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
