The National Monuments Service's description
This cross-slab is mounted on the W wall of 'The Gateway' (WI023-008001-) and is described and illustrated by Leask (1950, 31-2). Described by Leask (1950, 32) as ‘easily overlooked and set in the wall on the W. side is a nearly rectangular slab of schist 7½ feet [2.2m] long and, 5 feet [1.5m] high. It is incised with a rude cross having expanded ends and a curious curved and outward-spreading stem or shaft. Just to the left of the cross arm is a shallow square, sunk in
the stone. This cross was doubtless the mark of "Sanctuary" where the refugee, having arrived, could claim protection against summary punishment. The cross on the lintel of St. Mary's Church, outside the `city' may indicate a similar privilege of sanctuary’.
