The National Monuments Service's description
National Monument in state guardianship No. 416. A large domed cupmarked granite boulder (dims. 2.4m x 2m x H 1.4m) known locally as the 'Piper Stone' stands c. 40m NE of stone circle (WI015-010----) depicted on the OS 6-inch map as 'The Pipers Stones'. The upper surface of the boulder features a cross shaped groove (dims. Wth 0.06-0.1m x 0.03-0.05m D). One of the grooves is aligned E-W and follows a vein of quartz. The second groove is roughly N-S. North of the intersection the groove is well-defined. However, south of the intersection the groove is very shallow, and extends down the side of the slab, whereas elsewhere the grooves are restricted to the upper surface of the boulder. Six cup marks can also be found on the upper surface of the boulder. Three cupmarks (max. diam. 0.17m x 0.03m D) are found in the NW quadrant formed by the cross. A single cupmark (diam. 0.10m x 0.02m D) occurs in the NE quadrant. There are two further cupmarks in the SE quadrant (diam. 0.11m x 0.02m deep). There are no cupmarks evident in the SW quadrant.
