The National Monuments Service's description
Midden site described by Smal (1993, 22, 31) as following; 'Many aretfacts, including pieces of pottery and a strap-end, have come to light as a result of recent coastal erosion near the site of Rathdown Castle (WI008-011----). The pottery is mostly Leinster ware dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. The midden exposed by coastal erosion, is of uncertain date. It is located within the grounds of the medieval castle at Rathdown but possibly predates this period. Its contents help to reveal the diet of the people in days gone by. Bone remains of cattle sheep or goats have been uncovered, as well as the remains of horses. Some of these possess cut marks, signs of handling in the past. The midden was also found to contain many items of shellfish and sea snails, winkles, oysters, mussels, cockels and limpets'.
