Burnt mound

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated in the valley of the N-S Mahon River, with the steam c. 200m to the NW and a small hillock rising just to the W between the monument and the river. It was first identified as a burnt srpead by C. Moloney (2006) in testing (06E0163) on the line of a water pipe, and subsequently excavated (06E0285) by T. Janes.
A spread of broken and burnt stone (dims. 7m x 3m; T 0.6m) overlay blanket peat (T 0.2m), but there was no evidence of a trough. A piece of alder charcoal produced a C14 date of 1620-1494 BC (Janes 2008, 3 App 8). Fulacht fia (WA024-115----) is c. 90m to the SSW. (Janes 2009)
