Building

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated at the W edge of a broad marshy basin. The church of St Barry (WA017-003001-) is within a subrectangular graveyard (WA017-003002-) defined by a high masonry wall. A large building described by O'Donovan c. 1840 (L 58ft; c. 17.67m) S of the church (O'Flanagan 1929, 1-2), has been removed, but traces of it have been discovered in excavation (04E0285) during 2004 (Pollock 2007b). This is a masonry structure, but just to its S is a contemporary timber structure (WA017-003009-).

Further work under the same licence (04E0285) during 2007 on an extensive area (dims. c. 120m E-W; c. 30-40m N-S) S of the graveyard and running E produced more evidence of what appears to be the S wall (T c. 1.25m) of a building (ext. L 10m E-W) with a later masonry structure attached to the SE angle. These may be contemporary with two timber buildings c. (WA017-003009-) 5m to the S that are represented as faint traces of the N wall-bases. The area between the stone and timber structures was cobbled. Field boundaries on a rectangular plan are traceable to the E of these features. At the extreme E edge of the area are what might be roof material of medieval or post-medieval houses, (Pollock 2007b; 2010b).
