John Lee. 1597. W face of the NW pier of the tower of the Franciscan church (WA009-005032-).
Rectangular limestone slab with worn surface and one cracked corner on the N side of the NW pier of the tower. It is decorated with a Gothic lettered marginal inscription, a coat of arms in false relief and two incised figures in late 16th century costume. The heater-shaped shield has two coats of arms: a shield with a chevron impaling another with three arrows between a chevron (Walsh). The male figure on the left wears a long tunic with a cloak and holds a staff in his right hand. The female ….. wears a long skirted gown with short sleeves and a collar and who has a short flicked out hairstyle. Her hands are clasped at the waist. The inscription is:
HIC JACENT JOHANES LEA/ FILIUS NICOLAI QVONDAM CIVIS CIVITATIS WATERFORDIA QVI /OBIIT ANO 1597 [die men]SIS/ 7 OCTOBER ET HELEN WALSHE VXOR EJUS QUAE OBIIT ANO DI 1597.
