Bastioned fort

Construction of this fort outside St Patrick's Gate (WA009-005007-) may have begun in the 1590s under Capt. Edmund Yorke, but it was not completed until 1625. It has a commanding view of the entire city and is now occupied by the Garda station. It was known as 'The Citadel' and is depicted in varying forms on 17th-century maps by Phillips (1685) and Goubet (c. 1680), and on a 17th-century map published in Ryland (1824, 106ff.). The N wall and parts of the E and S walls survive. (Bradley et al. 1989, vol. 2, 227-30)
