On a S-facing slope in undulating pasture. The castle is not visible above ground level. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) 'the walls of a little burned castle' under the proprietorship of 'James Prendergast of Tulloemealane Esqr Irish Papist' in 1640, were standing in the mid-17th-century (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 339). The castle is described as 'site of' on the 1st ed. (1840) OS 6-inch map.
