Ford

The National Monuments Service's description

On a flat island (c. 240m N-S x c. 95m E-W) in the middle of the River Suir, under pasture. The island is subject to flooding. The 1st (1840) and 2nd (1907) eds. OS 6-inch map depicts a ford giving access to this island. The ford is shown as a double dashed line running roughly E-W from Clocully across the River Suir onto the upper E shore of the island (L c. 50m), the dashed line continues across the island to the opposite shore and then is depicted following the townland boundary down the river (L c. 120m) until it meets with a track in Knocknadempsey townland, opposite the south-western point of the island. There was a house (TS088-023002-) and bawn (TS088-023001-) on this island, which are referred to in the Civil Survey (1654-56) (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 342). There is no visible trace of this ford in the river.
