The National Monuments Service's description
On a natural rise overlooking the River Duag to S, in a valley at the foot of the Knockmealdowns. Shanrahan Church (TS087-022002-) is visible c. 50m to the N. The Civil Survey (1654-56) refers to 'Sir Richard Everard. Irish Papist' as the proprietor of 'Shanrehyn' in 1640, and mentions that 'All the s[ai]d lands are at present out of lyne whereon stands a wast house singled with a chemney, and the walls of an old ruinous Castle' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 375). Composed of sandstone rubble with some limestone, roughly coursed, with an external base-batter (H 1.4m; W 0.42m). Portion of the E wall survives (L 2.4m; T 1.4m) and the SE corner which forms a semi-circular turret (L 3.5m; W 1.5m) on the exterior and is squared in interior as at Ballyboy (TS087-024----). The E wall is badly cracked near the corner turret. There are no features in external face of this corner 'turret' and the interior is completely obscured by ivy. The NE corner, also forming a semi-circular turret externally, has collapsed and is lying on its side. The external estimated length of the E side is 14m.
