The Manor of Kilsheelan was granted to William de Burgh c. 1192 (Power 1989, 15). In the 1230s Richard de Burgh was granted the right to have 'warrens' in his demesne of Kilsheelan (Count de la Poer 1899, 116-19). Fifty years later, in 1281, Richard de Burgh exchanged Kilsheelan for lands in Ulster and Otto de Grandison was granted the Manor because of his services to the king (ibid.). In 1345 Adam de Maydwell was granted one plot of land in the tenement of Kilsheelan 'which lies between the cemetery of the said town and the River Suire' (COD vol. 3, 1413-1509, 365). The Reeve and community of the town were fined 20d in 1359 for the assize of bread and ale (COD vol. 2, 1350-1413, 38) and seventy-three years later they are recorded as being summoned to the Seneschal's Court in Clonmel (COD vol. 3, 1413-1509, 95). In 1570 Philip Wale of Newtown was granted the tenement called 'Gareynyvonisioge' containing an acre in the town and fields of Kilsheelan (COD vol. 5, 1547-1584, 190) and in the same year the rectory of Kilsheelan was granted to Sir Thomas Butler by Edward I (ibid. 169). (Farrelly and FitzPatrick 1993). There are two upstanding monuments in Kilsheelan, the motte (TS084-002002-) and church (TS084-002001-).
