The National Monuments Service's description
Identified during construction work for a housing development on the NE outskirts of Clonmel (Elder 2003, 381). On a slight rise and c. 750m N of the River Suir. According to Elder (ibid.) the standing stone (0.43m x 0.19m; H 1.25m), rectangular in plan, appears to be of quarried granite and partially dressed. Elder (ibid.) noted on the NW angle 'traces of a possible ogham inscription, although this is quite weathered and difficult to determine'. He also noted that, 'it is likely that the stone was transported by a former landowner from an as yet unknown location, but possibly a nearby enclosure site, (TS083-023----)' (ibid.). The stone was removed and its current location is unknown. If the stone is composed of dressed granite then it is likely to be a scratching post erected in the 19th or 20th century.
