The National Monuments Service's description
Less than a mile E of Clonmel, immediately S of the River Suir, in an area formerly in Co. Waterford. According to Lyons (1942, 73) the 'ancient Pointed door-way in brown stone built into modern brick-work at the mill seems to imply ancient ecclesiastical occupation here, and such occupation can only have been Franciscan'. There is no trace of this doorway which appears from Lyons' photograph (ibid. 72) to be medieval in form but is likely to be a late 18th-century Gothic imitation. It was incorporated in the building complex associated with Suir Mills which had been built by 1782 (ibid. 73). It may well have been one of a pair of pointed doorway built on either side of the main mill entrance and visible in a sketch of Suirville mills from 1889 in Bassett’s Directory (Withers 2006, 6-7). The current location of the doorway is unknown.
