Mausoleum

The National Monuments Service's description

On break of slope at N end of graveyard (TS078-036003-) with church immediately to the W. Built by the Butler family, probably in the late 17th or early 18th century (Flood and Flood 1999, 4). It is a rectangular stone building with high pitched gables. The mausoleum was entered through a doorway in the W gable, now bricked-up and was lit by a window in both the N wall and E gable, both bricked-up. According to historical records buried within the mausoleum are Col. Thomas Butler of Kilcash (d. 1738), Margaret Butler, Lady Iveagh (d. 1744), Archbishop Christopher Butler of Cashel (d. 1757), Walter Butler, 16th Earl of Ormond (d. 1773) and John Butler, 17th Earl of Ormond (d. 1795) (ibid., 6). The vault was sealed in the 1950s or 60s by Tipperary S.R. Co. Council (ibid, 6). In 1982 the S wall of the mausoleum was breached and the vault entrance was excavated but no memorial slabs or inscriptions were found, only a handful of human bones(ibid.). The vault was damaged and resealed in 1991 (ibid.).
