The National Monuments Service's description
Lyons (1934, 260-61) refers to a 'Fort in Newtownanner Demesne' and from this possible earthwork (TS077-106----) there 'appear to have been two raised roads leading from this fort southwards and westwards to the river at the ford where the present Anner bridge stands, the second road having been built after the first had been damaged by flooding from the river. There are also traces of a double road leading from the fort to the islet south west of Newtownanner House: each road is 15 feet [4.5m] at the base, hog-backed in section, and 21/2 feet [0.7m] high: they are about 12 feet [3.6m] apart. This roadway may have been intended for hauling boats up to the shelter of the fort when not in use'. The location of these roads within Newtownanner Demesne is unknown, however, it is possible that Lyons was misinterpreting landscape features associated with Newtownanner House.
