The National Monuments Service's description
In mixed woodland and undergrowth, c. 70m WNW of Anner Castle (TS077-089----), on a steady NW-facing slope. A level area (dims. 26m N-S; c. 17m E-W) defined by stepped counterscarp (overall Wth 4.6m; H 2.2m) along the SE side which was arranged as a scarp (Wth1.6m; H 1.15m), a short terrace (Wth1.5m;H 0.2m) and a scarp (Wth 1.5m; H 0.85m) on the upslope. The downslope to NW was defined by a similar counter scarp (overall Wth 6m; H 2.55m) arranged as per the SE side. A level area (Wth 4.5m) located at the base is defined by a bank (overall Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.4m) which falls steeply to the River Anner on exterior. The interior is cut (D 1.1m) into the hillslope at the SE end of the NE side, creating a level terrace. There is no visible trace of enclosing elements to SW. Lyons (1934, 260) describes it as a 'rectangular fortification or earthwork adjoining the River Anner'. The earthwork is not indicated on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map but is indicated on the 2nd (1904) ed. (dims. c. 50m NE-SW; c. 20m NW-SE) and may be the result of landscaping associated with Anner Castle. According to the present occupants of Anner Castle this area was used as a tennis court in the past.
