The National Monuments Service's description

The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to Castlejohn as containing 'a castle, a slate house & a Mill out of repaire. It is inhabitted by few tenants' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 142). There is no clear evidence of a nucleated settlement as the 'tenants' may have been dispersed around the lands of Castlejohn. However, if there was a settlement cluster the exact location is unknown.
