Graveslab

The National Monuments Service's description

A 17th-century graveslab within the church (TS071-019----) of Grangemockler. According to the OS letters 'Inside this Church, at the southeast corner, there is a small gravestone now much mutilated marking the burial place of a gentleman of the name Shea, and his wife (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 58 (157)). The inscription begins:- Hic jacet Joannes Shea Generosus et uxor eius Elisia'. It is possibly the same graveslab as that from which a rubbing was taken (FitzGerald 1913-1019, vol. 9, 358) and of which the upper and lower portions of the slab were missing. The inscription, which 'ran lenghways on the slab parallel to the shaft of the cross; what is deciperable runs thus:- .....LA GENEROSVS / ..... VXOR EIVS E / ........... ORETVR PRO EIS / 16.. (Stem of a Cross) [QVISQVIS] ERIS QVI TRANSIEHIS, STA / [PERLEGE,] PLORA. SVM QVOD ERIS, / [FVERAMQVE QVOD ES], PRO ME PRECOR, ORA. (Traces of letters) ..... PVERAq QVO' (ibid.). The inscription is accompanied by three shields with coat-of-arms, the lowest of which appears to bear a chevron between three pheons, points upwards (ibid.). It could not be located at time of inspection.
