Burial ground

The National Monuments Service's description

On the crest of a hill in undulating terrain, in grassland. According to Mullally (1862-63, 7) 'there is an appearance of an old boundary inclosing about an acre of land, which was an old burial ground, and contained a chapel. There is no vestige of the building; but in digging the place the labourers turned up large quantities of human bones - the place is held in great veneration by the neighbours'. There is no indication of a burial ground at this location on the 1st ((1840) ed. OS 6-inch map and it is indicated by a dashed line as a roughly rectangular area (map dims. 63m NE-SW; 41m NW-SE), with field boundaries forming the SE and SW enclosing element, on the 2nd (1904) ed. OS 6-inch map. The field boundaries are still evident but the NE and NW enclosing element is not visible at ground level. There is no visible evidence at ground level of this being a graveyard and there is also no indication of a church (TS071-011001-) at this location. Within the area of the burial ground there is a collapsed standing stone (TS071-011004-) and in the ditch of the field boundary to the SW there is a sculptured pieta (TS071-011003-) which may have been brought here from elsewhere as in the 19th century it appears to have been in the garden of the house nearest the burial ground (Mullally 1862-3, 148). There is a tradition of burials in the field and as a result it is not tilled.
