House - 17th century

Built onto the SW gable of a tower house (TS070-106001-), on the NW side of a farm courtyard. This is a four-bay, two-storey house (dims. 13.25m NE-SW; 6.9m NW-SE; wall T 0.87-92m) with a chimney (D 0.74m; Wth 2.2m), now blocked up, projecting from the rear wall and a large projecting chimney (D 2.33m; Wth 2.55m) 1.4m from the S angle, also blocked internally, in the SW gable. The latter chimney appears to have been extended at the base, it has a large opening to the SW suggesting it may have served a building adjoining the SW gable of the house. On the 25-inch OS map a building is shown extending from the SW gable and another from the rear of the house. A one storey outbuilding currently occupies the W end of the SW gable. It is possible, given the very large size of the gable chimney, that originally the house extended further to the SW. The roof line is slightly lower than the gable, Craig and Garner (1975, 87) suggest that this may indicate that the roof was once thatched. Internally the house is divided into three rooms on the ground floor (D 5.52m), one room leading to another, with a wooden stairs rising in the S angle. The wall thickness and projecting chimneys suggest a late 17th-century date for this house.
