Water mill - unclassified

The National Monuments Service's description

The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes a boundary which ran 'to the sayd River Glassalling [Clashawley] & upwards the same River till oppositt to the mill of Strake [Strike] bounded on the West with the sayd Droumdyle [Drumdeel]' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 182). The same watermill 'one Corne mill, unroofed upon a brooke wch runns through it' appears to be described under the area of 'Kylmocley' which was in the proprietorship of Nicholas Everard in 1640 (ibid. 184). In narrow margin of pasture adjacent woodland, c. 1m from edge of Clashawley River. Indicated as a 'Flour Mill in ruins' on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. Rectangular area (dims. 5.7m N-S; 7m E-W) defined by random rubble wall (Wth 0.75m) to E and short return of N-side (L 1.7m) and of S-side (L 6.2m). Low, sod-covered wall footings for remainder of N and S sides and all of W side. Remains of window ope (Wth 0.8m; D 0.75m) at N-end, E-wall with camber relieving arch of narrow voussoirs; surround and parts of embrasure removed. Door ope (original Wth 0.8m; D 0.75m) at S-end, E-wall is breached (Wth 1.2m; H 1.75m) where jamb stones removed on W-side. Ope has semi-circular relieving arch of rough milky quartz voussoirs. Ope leads into lean-to, which is a later addition. Addition is a square area (L 3m) defined by upstanding walls to N and S and low remains to E. Construction of main compartment shows an attempt at coursing whilst adjoining lean-to is of small, uncoursed rubble.
