Crucifixion plaque

The National Monuments Service's description

Roughly centrally placed on the front facade of the almshouse (TS070-040003-). A depiction, in limestone, of the crucifixion in false relief (H 0.7m; Wth 0.67m), recessed with a moulded square frame (H 1m; Wth 0.95m; D 0.11m). Framed within a round-headed arch the crucified Christ is flanked on the dexter side by Our Lady and on the sinister by St John. The surface of the lower dexter side of the panel has broken off. Beneath the figures there is an incised inscription which was transcribed by Long (1892-4, 209) as: D. AMIA EVERARD ALIAS ROCHE, RELICIA JOANNIS EVERARD JUNIORIS, HAEC INSIGNIA EREXIT, QUA EVERARD FUNDATORES ET PATRONI HUJUS AEDIFICII APPONI (?) VOLUERANT ATQUE MORTI PRAEOCCUPATI NON POTUERUNT AFFIGI CURAVIT DIE X◦MAR 1646. Crotty (2012, 15) also gives a transcription, though reads May rather than March, and provides a translation as follows, ‘Dame Amy Everard, formerly Roche, relict of John Everard the younger, took care to affix these insignia on 10th May 1646, which the Everard founders and patrons of this building wished to do and were unable, being overtaken by death’.
