On a gentle W-facing slope within the NW quadrant of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS065-013001-) at Emly. A number of ditches, pits, post-holes and metalled surfaces were uncovered during archaeological excavation prior to the construction of a housing development on the NW side of the village. A burial ground (TS065-013019-) was discovered c. 20-40m to the N and St Peter’s well (TS065-013005-) lies c. 40m to the W. Three phases of activity were identified during the excavation. An enclosure (TS065-013021-) is associated with the earliest pre-13th century phase. A large number of pits and ditches are associated with 13th/14th century pottery. According to the excavator (Henry 2003, 33) a large linear, gently sloping, flat-bottomed ditch (Wth 1.2m; D 0.75m), running N-S for 17m, may enclose some medieval features to the W. A series of post-holes extend N-S c. 10m to the S of this linear ditch. These have been interpreted as a possible fence line, possibly of medieval date. Other features, interpreted as furrows and field drains have been dated to the post 1600 period, including a round-ditched structure which may have been constructed from turf sods, this structure has no entrance, hearth or occupation layer.
