The National Monuments Service's description
In pasture, on an elevated area, just above a 300ft contour. A church and graveyard (TS063-023001- and TS063-023002-) and tower/fortified house (TS063-023003-) form the central point of this settlement cluster. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6), upon the sayd lands is a thacht house with a chimny and 12 cabins without any imp[ro]vement'. James Tobyn of Killaghey Esqr. and Pierce Butler of Callin Esqr. were landowners of Modeshil (Ayre) (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 125). The Down Survey depicts a church and 3 dwellings, one each to E, S and SW. The houses which formed the settlement of Modeshill are not visible at ground level in the vicinity of the church and graveyard. Though the precise location for the medieval settlement at Modeshil is unknown, it is most likely to have centred on the medieval church and graveyard. However, the extent of the settlement is unknown.
