The National Monuments Service's description

On level ground, land rises to W and NW in gently undulating terrain. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Clonbrogan has 'a small old castle, wanting repaire' and the proprietor in 1640 was 'Richard Butler of Clonebrogan Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 198). In the grounds of Clonbrogan House there are several limestone architectural fragments of probable 16th-century date, including a chamfered jamb (L 0.37m x Wth 0.25m x T 0.21m) with glazing bar holes, a mullion (L 0.47m) with glazing bar holes and a chamfered window head or sill of a single-light window (Wth of ope 0.15m). It is likely that in the late 17th/early 18th century the castle was replaced by the present Clonbrogan House (TS062-036----).
