Armorial plaque

The National Monuments Service's description

Incorporated into the masonry of the external face of the SE wall of the mid-19th-century Market House, in use as the Tourist Office, in the centre of Main Street, Cashel. This plaque consists of a rectangular block of cut limestone decorated with a rectangular shield with an ogee-shaped base surmounted by a crest and surrounded by mantling terminating in tassells. It bears the initials I S and M C and the date 1631 in raised lettering. The shield is impaled, the sinister containing the arms of the wife M C charged with a bend Ermine charged with five roses or other flowers between two saltires botonny. The arms on the dexter side of those of Sherlock, Per pale Argent and Azure two fleurs de lys in fess counterchanged, differenced with a crescent, the cadency mark of a second son. The crest consists of a pelican in her piety set on top of a gentleman's helmet. A similar coat-of-arms, bearing the same initials, is incorporated in the wall monument (TS061-025104-) in St. John's graveyard (TS061-025035-).
