House - 17th century

In flat grassland in an upland region with good views in all directions. An 18th century two-storey five-bay country house (Bence-Jones 1988, 145) with a possible 17th-century house incorporated into the rear, along an E range of buildings. All that survives of the possible 17th-century house is the E gable (wall T 1.2m; ext. dims 7.2m N-S) of a two-storey, single-pile house orientated E-W which protrudes E beyond the external wall of the E range of buildings built onto the rear of the 18th-century house. The gable, which is twice the thickness of all the other walls in the adjoining buildings, survives two storeys high and was originally crowned by four diamond-shaped jacobean-style brick chimney stacks which have been subsequently rendered and altered. Two of the chimney stacks were functional while one on either side were dummy stacks according to the present house owner. There is no visible evidence of the castle (TS056-001002-) described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) (Simington 1931, vol.1, 124). Two houses are indicated on the Down Survey maps, one of which may be the house described above.
