Castle - unclassified

The National Monuments Service's description

In grassland on a SW-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good views in all directions. 19th-century cottage with walled farmyard and wall orchard immediately NW of castle. No surface remains visible of castle described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'a small castle with an old large bawne & two or three thatcht houses within the bawne' and Edmond Marnell is listed as owner of the castle and bawne in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 114). Associated with the castle was a 'Mill standing upon a small streame about muskett shott from the castle' (ibid.), a portion of millrace (TS055-080----) may be associated with this mill which is unlocated (TS055-082----). The walled farmyard and the walled garden and 19th-century cottage to the NW of the castle may be built from the rubble of the castle. None of the masonry from the walled garden or the farmyard has appearance of a medieval bawn wall (TS055-006002-). The average wall thickness of the walled farmyard and the orchard wall measures 0.6m, with no evidence of a base-batter or any other medieval features. According to John Davis White (1892, 102) the castle was built 100 yards/metres to the south of the old house of Lisnamrock. The castle was the residence of Lieutenant Charles Langley who was involved in the siege of Clonmel in the 17th century (White 1892, 102). A large tree and well house now mark the location of the castle.
