The National Monuments Service's description

In grassland at base of an E-facing slope of rising ground in upland region with good views from N through E to S, higher ground to W. Castle had been provisionally located to Ballyowen House which is a mid-18th-century six-bay three-storey house over a basement with central breakfront with no evidence of earlier fabric. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'small old castle wanting repaire' and Walter Sall of Garrane is listed as proprietor in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 243). Castle remains unlocated within the townland.
