Burial ground

The National Monuments Service's description

On the E-facing slope of Knockboy hill in upland region with good views to N-W and S with higher ground to E. Skeletons were revealed c. 15-20 yrs ago when the base of the hill was being quarried into for the construction of stables. The exposed face of the hillside with the skeletons was left uncovered for the last 15 years and was recently recorded (Jo Moran, Unpublished report, 'Skeletons at Knockboy Stud, Gurtnahoe, Co. Tipperary'). According to the report a possible enclosing ditch for the burials was recorded at the S end of the section, which may have been the enclosing ditch of a burial ground located to the S of the burials. One of the burials consisted of an articulated skeleton placed within its own gravecut and orientated E-W. No evidence for any grave goods, grave marker or coffin remains. Several other skeletons were noted some of which cut across each other. These burials may relate to other burials found in Knockboy townland (TS049-058----), though as the exact location of the latter burials is unknown this cannot be confirmed.
