The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on the N spur of a break in a N-facing slope, in pasture. A stream runs N-S at the base of the slope immediately to the E. The site has been levelled, however, faint indications of foundations (dims. c. 15.4m N-S; Wth c. 2m) are still visible though less so on the E side. According to the OS Letters nothing remained of the castle called 'Caislean Cruinn', though its location was known locally (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 187).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
