The National Monuments Service's description
Situated at the base of a N-facing slope on level ground. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) there 'standeth a stumpe of a Castle' in Monaquill (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 235). However, according to family tradition the castle was located in a grove of trees c. 30m W of the house and stone from the castle and earlier house were used when the present nineteenth-century house was constructed. No early stonework is visible in the present house or in the surrounding walls and farm buildings. No visible trace of the castle at ground level.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
