The National Monuments Service's description

Situated at the foothills of the Silvermines mountain range on flat pasture with good views to the N. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in Traverstowne there stood the 'ruined Walls of an old Castle with a mill seate & a brooke running through it, & two thatcht Cabbins' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 240). It has been assumed that Traverston House the residence of the Going family was possibly built on or incorporated the castle described in the 1654-56 Civil Survey. This house has been demolished (Bence-Jones 1988, 305). It is possible that the castle was located elsewhere within the townland.

The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
