The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on a low rise in flat pasture with extensive views. Only the semicircular wall-footings of a small tower (TN020-057001) survive with the wall-footings of a possible bawn wall (T 1m) projecting from the N face of the possible tower. It may be the remains of a circular flanking tower with a projecting bawn wall. According to the OS Letters the circular tower measured internally 5.7m approx. with a possible vault over the first floor (O' Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 114). Low wall-footings of a possible building (TN020-057003) to the N of the bawn may be remains of a stone house mentioned in the Civil Survey in 1654-6 (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 147). Described in the Civil Survey as: 'castle stands mortgadged unot Richard Lennard of the Citty of Lymicke sheoo Maker. Upon these 3 plds. stands a castle and a stone house' (ibid.).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
