The National Monuments Service's description

Civil Survey (1654-6) mentions 'a watercornemill' in 'Ballyhosty' which was under the ownership of 'Charles Carroll of Behagh Gent Irish Papist' in 1640 (Simington ed. 1934, vol. 2, 288). The location of the watermill was tentatively assigned to a mill in the townland indicated as 'Distillery' on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map but not indicated on the 2nd ed. OS 6-inch map. However, field inspection established that this is of nineteenth-century date. Watermill remains unlocated within the townland.

The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
