Water mill - unclassified

The National Monuments Service's description

Described in the Civil Survey of 1654-56 as 'a ruined castle (TN014-057001-) irrepayreably demolished two mills, a fishing weaire (TN014-057007-) two thatcht houses six cottages & a garden plott' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 301). The Countess of Ormond is listed as proprietor of the lands of Ballyartella in 1640 (ibid.). Present mill building, indicated on the 2nd (1901-05) ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Ballyartella Mill (Woollen)' is of late date but may be on the site of the earlier mill mentioned in the Civil Survey. The ruins of a post-medieval mill building still survives 19m NE of Ballyartella tower house (TN014-057001-). This mill building may have been built on the site of an earlier mill mentioned in the 1654-56 Civil Survey or may incorporate fabric from the medieval mill. Hanly's Woollen Mill buildings still operating today are located 16m to the NW. It is possible that the medieval mills may have been at other locations within the townland.
