Settlement deserted - medieval

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on the E shore of Lough Derg. Described in the Civil Survey 1654-6 as the 'Mannor of Dromineer &c appertaineth a Courte Leete & Courte Barron wth all the Rights privileges & immunities belonging to a mannor. Uppon the sd lands stands an old castle six thatcht houses and fowerteene cottages' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 298). John Cantwell of Cantwells Court in Kilkenny is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.).
The settlement at Domineer dates back to at least the twelfth century as is evidenced by the presence of a Romanesque church (TN014-004003) and a late thirteenth/fourteenth-century hall-house (TN014-004001).

In 2001 archaeological monitoring by Ed Danaher of the removal of the old toilet facilites in Dromineer Bay revealed no archaeological features (Bennett 2003, 382). Monitoring carried out under licence No. 01E1090.
