The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on rock outcrop on high ground in an upland area overlooking Annagh lake to the SW and Lough Derg to the W. According to the Patent Rolls of James I, in 1618 the king granted the castle, town and lands of Annagh to Sir Lawrence Esmond, Knt. (Cal. pat. Rolls, Ire., Jas I, 359). The 'castle, town and lands of Annagh' which were part of the estate of Edmund Roe O'Kennedy (ibid., 356) were granted by the King to Sir Lawrence Esmond, Knt. (ibid. 359). There are no earthworks visible at ground level in the vicinity of Annagh tower house (TN009-036).
