Situated on a NW-facing slope of rising ground overlooking the shores of Lough Derg to the W. Kilbarron church listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 302). The Royal Visitation of 1615 described the building as a 'church and chancell in ruin' (Murphy and Ormond 1914, 220). In the centre of a rectangular graveyard (approx. dims. 46m N-S; 72m E-W) are the ruins of a nave and chancel church (TN009-003001) built with roughly coursed sandstone and limestone rubble with an angle buttress at the NE. Graveyard contains 18th and 19th century headstones. Graveyard boundary wall was first built in 1868 when the Board of Guardians, of Borrisokane Union, acting as a Burial Board, proposed 'Enclosing the Burial Grounds of Cloghprior and Kilbarron. A day will shortly be fixed, duly published, when a Committee of Board, together with their Clerk, will meet the Ratepayers at the aforesaid Burial Grounds for the purpose of ascertaining what is required to fence them, By Order James A. Ralph, Clerk to Burial Board, 9th November, 1868' (Nenagh Guardian 11/11/1868). In 1880 Kilbarron Church ruins and graveyard was vested by the Church of Ireland to Burial Board of Borrisokane Workhouse Union. The head of a single-light ogee-headed window from the medieval church has been reused as a headstone in S quadrant of graveyard.
