The National Monuments Service's description
Listed in SMR (1992) and RMP (1998) as castle possible. No castle indicated on 1654-7 Down Survey map in general vicinity of the former house known as Derry House (indicated on 1st ed. OS 6-inch map) (NLI MS 721). No surface trace of any castle in area marked on six-inch OS map. Castle not marked on any edition of the OS six-inch map. The 1843 ed. OS six-inch map has "site of Derry Ho.". No evidence that any castle ever existed at this location. The Ordnance Survey Name Books of c. 1840 describe the house 'Derry old House' which might suggest that it dated from the 17th century. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that this 'house is raised to the foundation. It was last occupied about 20 years ago by a widow Whalen' (SMR file).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
