The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on the brow of a gentle slope in undulating pasture with a nearby bog to the S. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'an old stumpe of a castle, a decayed orchard & fower cottages' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 318). O'Donovan describes the castle as a circular structure located in the farmyard of Kilcarren House (FitzPatrick 1985, vol. 2, 69). Several architectural fragments including portions of a limestone window are located in a field to the S of the castle site. No visible remains at ground level.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
