Graveyard

The National Monuments Service's description

A raised subrectangular area (45m E-W; 26m N-S at W end; 39m N-S at E end) defined by a poorly constructed drystone wall (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.6m; T c. 1m). The ruin of the medieval parish church of Toomour (SL040-140001-) is located on the E side; its E wall is incorporated into the graveyard wall. The interior is grass-covered and generally level but S of the centre it slopes gently to the S. A leacht cuimhne (SL040-140003-), holy stones (SL040-140006-), three cross-inscribed stones (SL040-140005-; SL040-140009-; SL040-140010-) and a saint's stone (SL040-140008-) are in the SW quadrant. There are no visible remains of headstones or other grave-markers. The graveyard has recently been enclosed by a post-and-wire fence (pers. comm. M. B. Timoney). A bishop of 'Tuaim-fobhair' [Toomour] was ordained by St Kevin of Glendalough in the 6th century (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 407). There are no visible remains of any ecclesiastical enclosure around the graveyard.
