The National Monuments Service's description
According to Wood-Martin (1883-4; 1888), this feature was destroyed about the year 1817. The father of his informant had been engaged in its demolition. Wood-Martin (1883-4, 451, no. 8; 1888, 172, no. 8) states: 'It appears to have been oblong in form; it lay right in the centre of the present road, and most of the slabs of which it was composed are now in the fences on either side'. In 1836 it was recorded as 'Gliopach Mór' (OSL, 242). There is a possibility that the feature referred to was a megalithic tomb. (Ó Nualláin 1989, 99, no. 25)
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
