The National Monuments Service's description

O'Rorke ([1889], vol. 2, 168) mentioned a 'great linen factory' which was established by the Fitzmaurices at Ballymote in the mid-17th century. It was described by Arthur Young as a bleach mill, 81 feet [24.68m] long and 28 feet [8.53m] broad and 17 feet [5.18m] high and supplied with water from a 34 acre [13.75ha] millpond (ibid.). Its precise location is not known.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
