Graveyard

Within a possible ecclesiastical enclosure (SL034-144005-). A trapezoidal graveyard (c. 50m E-W; c. 60m N-S at W end; c. 40m N-S at E end) enclosed by a stone wall. The entrance, with plain stone pillars and a wrought iron gate, is at the W end of the S wall and there is a similar entrance at the W end of the N wall. At the centre is the ruin of the C of I parish church of Emlaghfad which probably incorporates the core of the medieval parish church (SL033-144001-). An area immediately S of the church contains a collection of 18th- and 19th-century chest-tombs and elaborate headstones belonging to a number of prominent Protestant families from the area (McTernan 1995; 1997). The earliest headstone noted was dated 1709 and lies within the church. A bullaun stone (SL033-144007-) was recently found within the interior of the graveyard. To the E, S and W are the remains of a bastioned fort (SL033-144008-).
